The author of this book was one of my former students, who completed his university studies and received his Master’s Degree in Sport Science and coaching of weightlifting at the University of Physical Education , Budapest , Hungary .

The book is based on the author’s 17 years of coaching career. During this period he was the national coach of Honduras , El Salvador and Norway . On behalf of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the IOC Olympic Solidarity he lectured at international coaching courses and seminars organized for weightlifting coaches in 13 countries at four continents.

The book provides a comprehensive overview on weightlifting including such important issues as basic training concepts and methods, anatomy and physiology of muscles, training principles, power development, the problem of overwork, selection of talent, specific training of the various age groups, characteristic of female weightlifting, etc. Therefore this book is highly recommended to professional people as well as to amateurs who would like to gain a deeper knowledge in weightlifting.

However, I would like to add a personal note. Being a professor of physiology, one of my important responsibilities is to teach athletes about the harms of doping. At the same time, being the sport physician of the Hungarian National Water Polo Team – the winner of the last two Olympic Games – I must also confront the unfortunately increasing doping cases of the sport world. Reading this book I was therefore particularly impressed by the author’s dedication to fight against doping in weightlifting in all its forms. His advice, as author, coach and the president of the Hungarian Weightlifting Federation to the would be coaches is indeed educating: “You should categorically reject the banned, thus harmful, performance enhancing substances and you should teach your young athletes in such spirit.
